Point level detection

In point level detection, a sensor registers when a defined level is reached and transmits an appropriate switching command. The switching command starts or stops the filling equipment, such as conveyor belts or pumps, or is converted into a binary signal and integrated into a process control system. Level detection can be realized in liquids, pastes, powders or rough bulk solids.

Typical applications for point level detection are process tanks, storage tanks, silos or pipelines in the process industry. Point level detection is used for minimum or maximum detection, leakage monitoring or overfill protection.

Every industry places its own very specific demands on measurement technology. VEGA offers many different physical measuring principles for point level detection. It can provide a point level detector perfectly adapted to the properties of the medium as well as the individual process conditions at the measuring point.

Vibration
VEGASWING, VEGAVIB, VEGAWAVE
The vibrating level switch has a vibrating rod or tuning fork that is made to vibrate. When the vibrating element comes into contact with the medium, the vibration changes and the device issues a switching command. An extremely versatile technique.
Capacitive
VEGACAP
Sensor and vessel form the two electrodes of a condenser. When the level of the medium changes, the electrical capacitance between the electrodes also changes. From this the sensor electronics deduces when the defined level is reached. A robust technology for applications in which heavy buildup makes measurement difficult.
Radar
VEGAMIP
The microwave barrier works like a light barrier: when the medium crosses through the microwave beam between transmitter and receiver, the signal is damped. Advantage: contactless and insensitive to fouling.
Conductive
VEGAKON, EL, VEGATOR
Conductive measuring probes detect the resistance of the medium when their electrodes are immersed in a conductive medium. A small alternating current begins to flow, which is measured for amplitude and phasing and converted into a switching command.
