SIL
Functional safety acc.  to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511
As the safety requirements for the protection of human life and the environment get higher and higher worldwide, the demand to implement the best possible safety-related technology increases. Until now it wasn't possible to comparatively assess equipment reliability and make concrete statements on risk coverage. The worldwide standard for this is set by IEC 61508, in which the type of risk assessment as well as norms and procedures for designing sensors, actuators, logic processing and control systems are defined. The goal is fault avoidance and fault control in every component of a Safety Instrumented System (SIS). Furthermore, the nature of the statistical risk assessment is described. The norm IEC 61508 offers the advantage of a uniform and harmonised procedure that is internationally described and defined, which thus contributes to legal certainty. The level of "functional safety" of a safety instrumented system is divided into stages from SIL1 to SIL4 (SIL = Safety Integrity level). Most applications with safety-related requirements have a classification of SIL 1 and SIL 2 as well as in some cases also SIL 3. The qualification of a component in accordance with IEC 61508 and/or IEC 61511 is verified by a conformity declaration. In addition, a "safety manual" is issued which summarizes all the safety relevant characteristics and information users and planners need for developing and operating a safety instrumented system.
The safety manuals are part of the documentation of every SIL qualified device and are also available in the download area of the VEGA homepage.
