Empty signal in a bag filling system

The application

In primary industries, many different kinds of bulk materials are processed, stored and packaged. These tasks are very demanding due to the various grain sizes, flowability and varying moisture content of the materials as well as dust generation and many other factors.

In a bag filling system, industrial minerals such as kaolin, feldspar and quartz sand of different grain sizes up to 60 mm are packaged in bags and palletized. Kaolin is used in the paper industry as a coating pigment and filler.

VEGAVIB 62 level switches are already in use in the system for full and overfill signal. The most challenging part of the measuring task is the empty signal, because at this position the level switch is constantly exposed to heavy abrasive wear. Installed equipment is extremely vulnerable here.

The process data

Medium:Industrial minerals - kaolin, quartz, feldspar
Bulk product properties:Varying grain size and moisture content
Grain size:Up to 60 mm
Special characteristics:Strong abrasion, dust generation
Production:shift operation

The solution

The microwave barrier VEGAMIP 61 reliably monitors the minimum level in the filling hopper. The non-contact measuring method measures from the outside, right through the abrasion-resistant ceramic lining of the funnel. It is spatially separated from the process and thus not subject to wear. This fast-responding sensor increases process reliability and availability of the bag filling system and thus quickly pays for itself.

The measurement setup can be very easily realized without having to install anything inside the process container. It operates continuously and with great reliability even at measuring points subject to extreme wear.

The advantages

AdvantageMaintenance-free operation through non-contact measurement
AdvantageReliable with all bulk materials - even if the materials are frequently changed
AdvantageContinuously high system availability due to wear-free measuring principle
