Ultrasonic was yesterday – the future is radar!

Compact level sensors with 80 GHz radar technology provide reliable measurement results under all conditions.

Advantages of radar technology compared to ultrasonic sensors

Where ultrasonic level measurement reaches its limits

Compared to ultrasonic measuring instruments, radar sensors measure unaffected by temperature fluctuations, vacuum or high pressures and are insensitive to contamination. 80 GHz radar sensors also convince with very good signal focusing. This makes it easier to separate measurement and interference signals - the measurement is much easier and more accurate.

Process and ambient influences

Radar sensors are unaffected by temperature, pressure or vacuum and provide correct readings under all environmental conditions.

Due to their physical measuring principle, ultrasonic sensors are exposed to considerable influences because the sound running time changes with temperature, e.g. due to solar radiation and gas composition. Even in heavy fog, wind or rain, the sound waves are additionally attenuated and the measuring range further restricted.

Dead zone and floodability

Radar sensors allow a safe measurement up to the sensor antenna, even in case of flooding.

Due to the process, flooding of the sensors occurs in some applications. Ultrasonic sensors are therefore often protected by mechanical flooding sleeves. However, such components can easily become contaminated and impair the reliability of the measurement. Radar sensors have no dead zone, do not require protective sleeves and measure reliably even in case of flooding.

Contamination and condensation

Radar sensors are insensitive to contamination and do not need to be cleaned.

In many applications, sensors struggle with buildup. Especially with ultrasonic sensors, this influences the reliability of the measurement signal and increases the dead zone. Thanks to optimized signal processing, radar sensors can suppress interference caused by buildup on the antenna system.

Reliability and accuracy

Radar sensors can also be used in confined spaces and installations.

Due to the high focusing of the 80 GHz technology, the radar beam can be aligned almost precisely to the medium to be measured. This means that there are no interference signals even with installations such as pipes or pumps, in narrow shafts or with deposits on walls. Compared to ultrasonic sensors, no interference signal suppression is necessary.

Why radar is the better ultrasonic

"VEGA talk" is a monthly series on the VEGA YouTube channel. The two faces of the channel are Tom Mulvey and Stefan Sum. Both are VEGA employees "in real life" and regularly talk to us about current topics. This time, Tom invited radar product manager Jürgen Skowaisa to appear on the show and present the radar sensor VEGAPULS.

New heart for radar sensors

Today, radar sensors can be found in all areas of everyday life, from simple motion detectors for door openers to complex distance sensors in vehicles. However, the requirements for industrial level measurement differ considerably. The radar microchip newly developed by VEGA has been specially optimized for the requirements of level measurement. Thanks to the small design, very compact sensors are now possible These are significantly less expensive and can replace the previous ultrasonic sensors in almost all applications.
  • Optimized for the reflection properties of different media
  • Smallest design for the construction of compact sensor technology
  • 80 GHz technology for a very good Signal focusing
  • High accuracy in wide temperature ranges
  • Low energy consumption optimized for level measurement
  • Integrated function monitoring reduces maintenance costs

Controllers

The optional VEGAMET controllers complement VEGAPULS radar sensors and are ideal for the requirements of the water and wastewater industry. They allow a simple implementation of pump controls, flow measurements in open channels and overfill protection according to WHG.
