Jake, Mechanical Engineering
Jacob provided great support to the development of a new product line. He performed research, conducted tests, contacted many potential new suppliers, and contributed to the generation of new concepts. He has been a pleasure to have on the team and will be missed.
What brought you to VEGA?
After the interview, I knew I could learn more at VEGA and be given the opportunity to work on a team of more experienced engineers and designers. I saw that the existing engineering co-ops were not only practicing engineering principals they learned in school, but were given opportunities to assume more responsibility and gain confidence in their ability to be an engineer.
What are your daily tasks at VEGA?
I have many different tasks from day to day, but over the course of my time at VEGA a few things I’ve been responsible for is designing experiments/testing the performance of various materials in the design of a new product being developed, compiling research for mechanical and electrical components, and communicating with suppliers of different fabrication processes.
Are there any special projects that you have worked on or are working on now?
I’ve worked with a small team of engineers dedicated to the development and implementation of a new line of VEGA products. A lot of work goes into developing a new product, and a lot of the work starts by fine tuning what the expectations and goals are before any design work is done. I was fortunate enough to be able to experience and in some cases contribute to the discussions that went on between engineers and managers about these goals and more so in discussions concerning the design details. What I really liked about this project was the fast-paced design; a design went from an initial concept as a model, to fabrication in the Design Lab, to being tested in a matter of days. I learned to be very detail-oriented fast.
What is your favorite thing about Ohio University?
I like that at Ohio University there is no shortage of interesting people to talk to. It also has a beautiful campus.
What is your biggest accomplishment at VEGA?
Within the project I have been working on, I tested various design concepts and evaluated their performance in a written report. This report gave a mechanical analysis which was used to select the best design moving forward on one part of the design of the whole product.
What kind of impact do you feel you are making at VEGA?
I feel that my drive to accomplish a task and freely communicate with others has given the product development team at VEGA a valued team member.
What is the most challenging part about this internship?
At times it was difficult to have to learn something on the fly, but overall the whole experience of working with other engineers and communicating in their language has been something I work on every day.
