When Mokokobale Diana Makgopa’s Professor of Drama at UCT (University of Cape Town) sent out an urgent appeal for a sponsorship to allow her to complete her studies, little did he expect to hear good news from a company selling level and pressure instruments.

But VEGA Instruments has a social responsibility track record for giving deserving young people a chance to succeed in life, and when MD John Groom received Professor Fleishman’s motivation letter it was hard to ignore. The result was a R60 000 sponsorship towards Mokokobale’s student fees, allowing her to complete her studies at UCT.

Mokokobale has completed two years of the BA Theatre & Performance Degree within the Drama Department and is on course to graduate at the end of 2016. The BA Theatre & Performance Degree is a four-year, honours equivalent programme.  According to Professor Fleishman, “Mokokobale has grown, from a slow beginning, to be considered one of our strongest and most admired students. Mokokobale has overcome more obstacles than most in fulfilling her dream of studying Theatre & Performance at UCT. Coming from the Limpopo Province, Mokokobale achieved an entrance scholarship from the Humanities Faculty in her first year and through consistent and dedicated hard work achieved the Dean’s Merit List in 2014. Her academic achievements continue to grow and her passion for her studies and chosen field is unwavering, despite the financial difficulties that her family faces”.

VEGA Instruments’ financial intervention has allowed this promising young  student to focus on her studies and not to worry about further student debt. Who knows, we might one day see her name put forward as an aspiring Oscar nominee?
