Reliable sewer network monitoring with Consibio’s portable system utilising VEGA radars

In many municipalities, monitoring wastewater flow in remote or hard-to-reach areas remains a challenge. These parts of the sewer network often lack power and connectivity, making it difficult to gain insights into how the system performs. Overflow risks, blockages, and inflow and infiltration (I&I) are difficult to detect early, which increases maintenance costs and environmental risk.

Danish company Consibio developed a portable datalogger – the Consibio Logger WD-68 – designed specifically for such environments. It runs on battery, includes cellular and satellite connectivity, and is packaged for quick deployment in harsh field conditions like manholes and underground chambers.

To reliably capture real-time level data from the sewer, the logger integrates VEGA’s radar sensor VEGAPULS C 21, but is also compatible with other radar sensors and pressure devices from VEGA. VEGAPULS C 21 provides accurate, non-contact level measurements regardless of weather, dirt, or changing flow conditions. Thanks to its compact size and robust design, it can be mounted directly above the wastewater in a manhole. 

The data collected by the VEGAPULS C 21 is fed into Consibio’s own software, which is hosted in the cloud. Utilities can view the data on The Rich Dashboard and, based on a few basic input values like pipe diameter and slope, the system calculates the flow in real time and provide actionable insights and early warnings on I&I, overflow, etc. The result: a complete view of what’s happening in otherwise blind spots of the infrastructure.

Consibio Data Loggers have already equipped sensors in  10 countries. Municipalities across Europe and the US are now gaining valuable insights into their sewer networks. They can detect early signs of overflow or infiltration and respond before problems escalate.

Because the system runs independently of external power or infrastructure, it can be installed in areas where traditional monitoring was previously impossible. And by basing the measurements on VEGA’s trusted radar technology, utilities gain a level of confidence in the data that is critical when planning maintenance or investments.
