Separation tank

Level measurement and interface detection in the separation tank

Process data

Measuring task:
Level and interface measurement, limit level detection
Measuring point:
Tank
Measuring range up to:
15 m
Medium:
Water-based media and hydrocarbons
Process temperature:
+20 … +80 °C
Process pressure:
0 … +16 bar
Special challenges:
Varying media properties, emulsions

Application

Separation processes often involve the separation of water-based media and hydrocarbons. Level measurement with guided radar utilises the effect that non-conductive media allow some of the radar energy to pass through, thereby enabling measurement of the interface between the water-based medium and the hydrocarbons. In interface detection with a vibrating level switch, the different densities of the media cause the tuning fork to vibrate at different frequencies. These frequencies can be converted into a switching command in the downstream controller to reliably differentiate between the two media.
